Description

To those of you who have played this game, and understand what I was trying to do in this picture-- you're a wonderful human being, never forget that.

I apologize for this rant:

<!--BEGIN RANT-->

I'd like to take this moment to honor a game that I hold very dear to my heart. A game that gets little to no recognition: Baten Kaitos. These games are more than some good characters and amazing plots, they made me -personally- feel special. Which sounds lame unless you've played it and understand what I mean. These games have everything. The battles are fun and fast-pace, the world is rich in details and secrets, the scenery is gorgeous (pretty much watercolor), and the soundtrack is some of Motoi Sakuraba's greatest work. Although Tales of the Abyss holds a special spot in my heart, on certain days BK is my favorite game. (Comparing the two, it actually has less flaws).

And it makes me so sad that NO ONE knows it-- I can say this. I worked at GameStop for a good half a year and I was the only employee there who played it, let alone knew of it. I saw crappy games released again and again, and I saw the vast majority of people buy this crap. I mean, I'm glad there are people out there who can enjoy games, but come on. Have we forgotten what quality is? I'm all for new ideas and developers and whatnot, but what happened to taking pride in their work?

Let's look at two of the most recent JRPG titles for the PS4: Tales of Zesteria and Star Ocean Integrity and Faithlessness. You cannot argue that either of these games are good. "SO" was okay, but had little to no plot and ended after 20hrs. Not to mention all the characters were bland apart from Emmerson. I don't know how you can score Crispin Freeman and manage a bland character. But then again, the blatant lack of care in recent games never ceases to amaze me. (Still, you'd have to go out of your way to make Crispin a bland character). And they were so cheap as to recycle all their old music! What!? Is that even a thing now??? I get that it was low-budget, but let's focus on making quality not quantity here. And then there's Zesteria........ the bane of my existence. Never have I hated a game so much. I would talk about what went wrong here, but it would take too long and it was basically everything. I go into my old GameStop to tell the employees to advise AGAINST selling that game.

Do yourself a favor and pick up an old favorite of yours. It doesn't even have to be BK, just an old game you love. Play it. Now play a new game and I dare you to even try comparing the two. Don't make stupid excuses, like "oh well they did well for a low budget," or "well nothing beats the original." Remember-- new games were made whilst perfectly aware of what it was that made "classics" great, only with better technology to work with.

I'm just bitter because it's been years since I've played a JRPG that made me lie awake at night thinking about it. After completing Star Ocean (and feeling robbed of half a game), I actually went back to the store and picked up Lost Odyssey. How are we still at an age where a game made in 2008 (?) is better than anything I can go into the store and pick up now?

GAAAHH. If you like these games, good for you. I'll respectfully disagree, and continue to question your sanity. If you want to talk about any of this, message me. I'll go on for days.

<!--END RANT-->

...I should've made a journal. But hopefully the pretty picture lures more people to be enlightened. Haha............. no one's going to read that rant. *shot*

The Baten Kaitos games are my absolute favorites, but I also liked Tales of Zestiria, so... *shrugs*.  I can see why some people wouldn't, though - it's not the best the series had to offer, and it did have plenty of issues.

As for the artwork itself, it's quite good. You did a nice job with foreshortening, and your linework is lovely. Always nice to see BK fanart.
